Custom CAI Instructions

Here are the instructions for my $9 CAI.

This will allow you to turn your 7" or 9" K&N Cone filter with the GP Store mounting kit into a true Cold Air Intake. If you still need to purchase the filter and mouting kit, you can get them from The Grandprix Store.

Note: You will also need a '99 coolant bottle.

Step 1:

Go to your local hardware store and pick up something like this..

The 9" Catch Basin cost $6.99 and the Catch Basin Plug cost $1.69. Both items were found at my local Menards store in the PVC section.

Step 2:

The box will be mounted so that the holes are on the sides. The cone needs to be mounted as high as possible in the box to allow the PCM to sit underneath it. Place the cone in the box so that it is touching the top and centered left to right. Trace around the rubber inlet to the cone onto what will be the back of the box. Cut out the hole you traced so that the rubber inlet of the cone will pass through the back of the box.

Step 3:

Remove the drivers side strut brace and make sure the PCM is free to move. Put the PVC elbow on the Throttle Body and rotate it out of the way. Put some sort of cushioning material on the fender where the the box will sit. (I used an old air filter) Put the cone in the box and get it down to where you can slide the PCM in. The PCM will fit snugly with cooling fins facing down and the plugs facing the passenger side. You can leave it half in, half out of the box until you get the cone hooked up. The box should fit nicely into the opening leaving about 3/4" above the front clip. Hook up your filter and intake plumbing and make sure everything is tight. You can now slide the PCM in as far as it will go. If you have a 9" cone, it will not slide all the way to the back of the box. Replace your strut brace. If your cushioning material was thick enough, the box should be held down tight with the strut brace.

Step 4:

I only installed a plug on the engine side of the box so it could still get air from the fender opening. The edge of the plug will have to be trimmed to fit around the PCM. (You will know what I mean when you look at it) Trim and install the plug and you are all done! Take it for a test drive and double check everything for tightness.

Conclusion:

I just finished a 1500 mile trip with this setup and had 0 problems. There is a noticable performace gain, especially at highway speeds. If you have any questions or comments about it, please feel free to email me.

Update!! Version 2 CAI is complete. Version 1 still works great but version 2 looks better. :) You can see pics on my picture page.
